No matter the type of emergency you may find yourself into, the drinking water is the first and most important item you need. The human body consists of 60 percent water, therefore every system in your body depends on it. Every day you lose a lot of water from your body by perspiration, urine and even when you breath, so you need to replace that water in order to maintain a good level of hydration therefore a good function of your body systems.
Maintaining a good level of hydration in an emergency situation can be a problem if you were not prepared and you don’t have a good supply of water stored. But even for a prepared family, an extended period may rise the same problem.
How much water do you need?
I am sure you all heard about the well known advice “Drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day.” That is around 1.9 liters. The Institute of Medicine recommends as following:
- For an average man 3 liters (13 cups)
- For an average woman 2.2 liters (9 cups)
Also you need to keep in mind that your body assimilates water from the food you eat as well. In fact around 20 percent of the daily needed fluids come from what you eat. Where to Find Fresh Clean Drinking Water in an Emergency

An aquaponic system is the best way to grow your vegetables, harvest fresh fish and have a very good source of water near your house. Aquaponics are closed self sustained systems, therefore the water is always there and there are very few losses that need to be replaced from time to time, witch makes it a very good source of water in an emergency.
